Questions about fake tan
For fake tan newbies or for those of you that tan on a regular basis but just want to know more about the world of sunless tan, here are the answers to some frequently asked questions in tan land.
I'm pregnant, am I okay to wear fake tan?
There are no known risks of fake tanning during pregnancy but it is probably best to use a 4-8 hour developing lotion as opposed to a spray on tan as this will add an element of moisture to the body, which will be great for avoiding stretchmarks. If you are in the later stages of pregnancy and can still be bothered to apply fake tan, you may need to enlist a secondary pair of hands to help you to get into the awkward areas.
Does fake tan smell really bad?
Generally a lot of fake tans have a strange biscuity smell, so if you are doing it at home it can be best to do it before bed as you don't want to smell like a digestive biscuit when you're out in public. However, there are some sunless tanners on the market nowadays that have a nice coconut scent to them so it may be better to invest in one of these instead.
I'm getting tanned then seeing my partner. Is sex okay after applying fake tan?
Well you won't get a chemical reaction if you opt for post tan intercourse but be warned that if you are planning to sweat, it is probably not ideal as the tan will run. A four hour gap is recommended.
I'm a man and I'm not planning on waxing my legs before I tan. Will I be okay?
Yes you'll be fine. Spray tanning is probably the best option as you can towel off the excess solution straight after you have been sprayed to get an even coverage.
I don't want to make a huge tanning effort then have it fade straight away. How long will my tan last?
If you take care of your fake tan it should last between 5-10 days with a week being the average. Just make sure that you look after it by using a mild body wash and moisturiser.
Is spray tanning safe? I'm a bit wary of chemicals.
Fake tan will only make the top layer of skin brown, hence the fading process, so there is no need to worry about it absorbing into the skin. In the states DHA, the chemical in fake tan, has been approved by the FDA as well as in Canada and most EU nations. It is non-toxic.
